A new report from online sharing service Shareaholic presents data showing that Pinterest is now ahead of Twitter, StumbleUpon, Bing, and Google in web referral traffic.

The study is based on Shareaholic’s network of over 200,000 publishers, which reaches more than 270 million people monthly. Shareaholic has been tracking Pinterest since the beginning of the year. For the purposes of this study, Google referral traffic is defined as those referrals that don’t come through organic search or AdWords, but on other Google properties, like Google Groups or static pages on related Google sites.

The social photo sharing site Pinterest was launched in March 2010, and is reportedly the fastest site in history to reach the 10 million unique visitors milestone, according to data from a comScore report which measured 11.7 million unique visitors for Pinterest in January 2012. By March 2012, Pinterest had surpassed Twitter in terms of referral traffic, as well as  YouTube, Google+ and LinkedIn combined. Having now surpassed StumbleUpon and Bing as well, it is currently behind only Facebook, Yahoo and Google organic search.

We had earlier studied the top global brands on Pinterest to see how they were using their pages, and had shared the examples of cases like Etsy, Whole Foods Market and Real Simple. 4.5% of Pinterest’s user base is now from India. In the past few months, several Indian brands have scaled up their presence Pinterest as well. Some examples are Club Mahindra, Pepe Jeans India and Vero Moda India.

Pepe Jeans India recently held a contest on Pinterest called the “Pin It To Win It” contest, where they encouraged people to follow them and re-pin content from the specially created contest board.

Pinterest can be used in various innovative and exciting ways by brands. Which interesting campaigns have you seen by Indian brands on Pinterest? Share with us.
